Title

ALTERATIONS IN NEURAL CIRCUITS IN THE NOCTURNAL ENURESIS: SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Introduction and objective

This review aims to identify evidence in the literature about changes in neural circuits that explain the complex picture of nocturnal enuresis.

Method

This systematic review was developed in accordance with the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook and the report followed the PRISMA guide (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses).The bibliographic search was performed on Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and PsycoInfo platforms. In the period from January to May 2023. Articles published in the period of twenty-two years, without language limitation, using the keywords: enuresis; nocturnal enuresis; nervous system; brain; brain disorders; maturation; neural pathways; neural pathways; neurodevelopmental disorders; neural circuits; child; magnetic resonance; electrophysiology; potential evoked; electrophysiological analysis

Results

Of the 324 studies found,70 were excluded by duplicate, fifty were selected by title and 36 selected by abstract. Subsequently, 25 were selected after reading in full, among these 1 was excluded for lack of publication, on 1 article was excluded because it is part of a single study, 1 study because it addresses another aspect in disagreement with the main theme and 4 studies were excluded after applying the methodological evaluation tool: Dows & Black. Thus, 18 studies were selected for the qualitative synthesis, all of which were cross-sectional studies, which used electrophysiological studies and structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging. According to results reported in these studies, enuretic children present maturational delay of neuronal circuits, specifically in the frontal lobe, thalamus, hippocampus, insula, parietal lobe, cingulate cortex, brainstem and cerebellum, when compared to children with typical development. A identificação, triagem, elegibilidade e inclusão dos estudos, através da leitura de títulos, resumos, tratados por dois autores, como incompatibilidades resolvidas por consenso ou por meio de um terceiro revisor.

Conclusion

The present study shows evidence of a general delay in maturity with morphological and functional changes in neural circuitry, explaining the complexity of enuretic children.
